I had been performing in open mics around NY before the pandemic. Then, when everything came to a halt, everything went virtual. Virtual concerts were everywhere. Indie and mainstream artists were participating and putting on shows for their audience. During 2020 and 2021, I had a few online live shows where I performed from my bedroom and live-streamed to YouTube.
But, once things began to quiet down at the end of 2021 and the start of this year, virtual shows were no longer needed. I don't remember exactly when it happened, but suddenly large concerts were a thing again. Bars and clubs were opening and letting people eat and drink inside. And open mics were back!
I wanted to be prepared for them, so I decided on my short setlist. Usually, you're only allowed to sing 2-3 songs. So, I chose my original songs Human and Trust (not yet released) and a cover of Underdog by Alicia Keys. If you tuned into my last virtual show, I also sang it then. I rehearsed my performance of the songs, my stage presence, and my between songs comments. I've done open mics in the past where I wasn't as prepared, but this time I wanted to be more professional. I like taking on an open mic of 15 minutes like a real paid show.
I signed up to perform at The Grape Room. When I got there, there were only 10 or so people in the bar. Part of me thought, "this is good, so in case I do bad, only a few people will see." But the other part of me knew, "I'm planning to do well, and I want as many people to see me as possible." But, I was pretty far down on the list. And as the night went on, a lot more people showed up. I also invited my mom to come and see me. Since I lived in NYC for years, she couldn't see me perform at those open mics. And I usually go alone, so there was no one to record me.
I was nervous, and like many open mics, I had to wait 3 hours to go on. But I had a great time and gained a fan and friend. It took courage for me to go out and perform live again after so long, but I'm glad I did. Being on stage felt so good. I felt so confident and liked talking to the rest of the bar between songs. Even though there were some technical difficulties, that may have been my best performance so far. I forgot what it felt like to perform with an audience in person. Virtual shows are great, but nothing beats the real thing.
You can visit the shows page to see my upcoming performances! I don't think I have to be nervous now. I'm excited to go, and I hope to see some of you there. If you've read this and see me there, I'd love to meet you!
